Western Museum of Flight
What makes this museum special is; it hosts two very special and rare aircrafts: YF-23 & YF-17.
As far as I know, there are only two YF-23s in the world. After the challange with YF-22 both took their places at museums. It is a common rumour that YF-23 is better in every aspect than YF-22 but due to the price lack and politics the YF-22 still flies.
The museum is located at Historic "Louis Zamperini Field" at Torrance, it is a city-owned public airport three miles (5 km) southwest of downtownTorrance, which is also approximately 25-30 miles away from city center. The airport also has the production facilities of the famous civil helicopter producer Robinson Helicopter Co. which founded in 1973.
As a history; the airport was completed by the United States Army Air Forces on 31 March 1943, and was known as Lomita Flight Strip. It was an emergency landing field for military aircraft on training flights. It was closed after World War II and turned it over to local government. Once turned over to the City of Torrance it was renamed Zamperini Field on December 7, 1946(wikipedia).
Western Museum of Flight is a small museums having two hangars at the airport side. YF-23, YF17, F-14 and T-38 are located seperately rounded by fence. The guys at the museum were very friendly and without any persist they accept to take me to where above aircrafts are located(by my rental car) nearly a km away from the main location of the museum. You cannot reached this section by yourself, you need an assistance.
Here how I reached:
Birds in the cage:
How I reached the museum? If you have no car in LA, believe me that you are a Zombie. If you do not have a GPS. You are a Zombie with a car:)
Shortly, a small but an extremely valuable museum which hosts very rare aircrafts and aviation facilities.
