Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum
A marvelous Marine Aviation Museum.
Museum is located at 4203 Anderson Ave near the former “Naval Air Station Miramar”; nowadays which named as “Marine Corps Air Starion Miramar” in San Diego. The home of the “Top Gun” training school.
The station is among one of the locations where “Tog Gun” Movie filmed. Besides; The volleyball scene in "Top Gun" was shot on sand courts on the base. No longer in existence, the courts were located north of Barracks 298-300. Hangar Three at VF-124 was used for many of the hangar scenes(tripsavvy.com).
Unfortunately no more acitive F-14s at the station for more than 10 years.
There are very special exhibits of the museum; for example CH-46 Sea Knight CH-46 was the one which evacuated U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin from the US Embassy, Saigon, prior to the Fall of Saigon.
Rarely find Douglas F3D-2 skynight is also a ver special aircraft which I have not seen previously at any other museums.
But I believe nothing makes this area special as the movie “Top Gun” did.
Don't forget to watch the movie once more time..
Also I would like thank two lovely ladies who were volunteered at the museum store for the chats.
As of today the museum exhibits are as follows:
